Milwaukee, Wisconsin: August 2010. Matthew gave a 45-minute presentation to Lolek, the young adult group associated with St. Mary's Vistation/St. Joseph's in Elm Grove, Wisconsin, entitled "An Introduction to the Deeper Significance of Church Architecture," with a question and answer session following.
St. Louis, Missouri: February 2010. Matthew led a three-part workshop on sacred architecture and liturgical planning with 60 seminarians of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary. Sessions were entitled "Unto the Altar of God: Liturgical Planning," "The Beauty of Holiness: Aesthetics and Theology," and "Unless the Lord Build the House: Architecture for the Parish Priest." Tulsa, Oklahoma: December 2009. Matthew gave an informal private presentation to Bishop Edward Slattery, the monks of a local Benedictine priory, and other representatives of the local clergy, entitled "Building the Modern Monastic Church," focusing on Benedictine architecture and liturgy.
Madison, Wisconsin: October 2009. Matthew lectured as part of the Cathedral Parish Theology on Tap series on "The Beauty of Holiness: How the Catholic Church is Rediscovering Her Architectural Heritage." A writeup on the event can be found here.
Sparta, Wisconsin: October 2009. Matthew gave a presentation to the Prior and monks of Our Lady of Spring Bank Cistercian Abbey entitled "Building the Modern Monastery," discussing the Cistercian monastic tradition of building. A version lecture was given to a nearby convent of Cistercian sisters in Prairie-du-Chien the following month.
Merrimack, New Hamshire: February 2009. Matthew lectured as part of an ongoing series on the sacred arts at Thomas More College on "Why Does Our Cathedral Look Like a Sam's Club? The Decline and Rise of Catholic Architecture in the United States."
Columbus, Ohio: September 2007. Matthew presented a paper at the annual national Society for Catholic Liturgy conference, this year at the Pontifical College Josephinum, entitled "Manifesting Heaven: Architectural Solutions for the Spirit of the Liturgy." Other speakers included Thomas Gordon Smith, Duncan Stroik, and William Heyer. This was later published in adapted form in Antiphon: A Journal of Liturgical Renewal in 2008.
Scranton, Pennsylvania: June 2006. Matthew presented a paper at the annual national Anglican Use Society entitled "Anglican Use Architecture" on a hypothetical student project for a Pastoral Provision church in Chicago. Other speakers included the late Cardinal Dulles and Fr. Carleton Jones, O.P. A version of the talk can be found here.
ART SHOWS, AWARDS AND EXHIBITIONS
Milwaukee, Wisconsin: July 2010. Two of Matthew's architectural watercolors were on display at the grand opening of the Deerwood Studios building in Brown Deer, along with work by other local artists.
Washington, D.C.: June 2010. Matthew's work St. Augustine (2009) was on display at the recent event "An Evening with the Sacred Arts," sponsored by the Foundation for the Sacred Arts. Other exhibitors included Neilson Carlin and Anthony Visco.
Washington, D.C.: April 2010. Matthew's thesis project, a design for a seminary in La Crosse, Wisconsin, was entered in the "A Living Presence" design competition and later displayed during the accompanying conference precedings.
Stillwater, Minnesota: November 2009. Several church furnishing and conceptual church designs, as well as original ink illustrations, were on display at the grand opening of Loome Sacred Gifts, a department of Loome Theological Booksellers.
Washington, D.C.: November 2009. Several church furnishing and conceptual church designs, as well as original ink illustrations (including Mystical Crucifixion with Angels Bearing Chalices and St. Michael, both 2006), were on display at the annual St. Cecilia's Arts Festival.
Latrobe, Pennsylvania, October-November 2009: A print, The Three Holy Maidens (2007), and an original ink illustration St. Cassian of Imola (2008) were accepted and displayed as part of the Catholic Art Competition and Exhibition at the St. Vincent Gallery at St. Vincent's College.
The Rambusch Prize for Religious Architecture, 2006: Awarded to Matthew Alderman for his University of Notre Dame thesis project Christ the King Seminary, La Crosse, Wisconsin.
